Ring Liner is a cellulose material that allows uniform water absorption to promote hygroscopic setting expansion of the investment. The liner compresses easily to allow for this expansion, but is eliminated during burnout. This creates a void between the ring and the investment mold making is susceptible to cracking.

While high-strength phosphate investments will withstand stresses, gypsum investments are weaker and "fins" may result from the mold cracking. This is especially true when Ring Liner is placed even with either end of the ring.
